Composer.
Andy began composing after discovering Romantic music and Film Scores. It was through Symphony Orchestra and Wind Band that he began to appreciate the different textures that instruments working together can create.
Studying at Aberdeen University, Andy was given the opportunity to enjoy contemporary music through the Sound Festival and University Concert Series, becoming acquainted with more modern composers and styles. He immediately started composing for large ensembles, familiarising himself with instrumental ranges and timbres. Studying composition under the tutelage of Prof. Paul Mealor, Dr. Geoff Palmer, and Dr. Miriama Young, Andy completed his undergraduate degree in 2010.
In 2011, Andy was granted the opportunity to compose three original songs for the Tim Williams Awards. This led to the composition of a light opera based on the West-Port murderers, Burke and Hare. In 2012, Andy completed his studies at Edinburgh University under the guidance of Prof. Nigel Osborne, Dr. Robert Dow, Prof. Peter Nelson, and Kenneth Dempster, gaining a Masters in Composition.
In 2015, Andy collaborated with Ian White to compose and record two symphonies for young orchestras, the Kinnoull Symphonies 1 & 2.
Andy's principal influences include modern minimalism (e.g. Philip Glass, Michael Nyman, Max Richter), the great film composers (e.g. Bernard Hermann, Ennio Morricone, Hans Zimmer and John Williams), video game composers (e.g. Nobuo Uematsu and Joe Hisaishi), and musical theatre composers (e.g. Stephen Sondheim, and Jason Robert Brown).
